Japanese Satsuma Garlic-bulb Vases. This finely painted pair of Satsuma earthenware vases depicts four different nobles in rich, gold embossed robes backed by Chinese-style rock outcrops. The quality of painting of the figures is of the highest caliber, more characteristic of scroll paintings than ceramics. The subjects have an almost middle-Eastern appearance as if these pieces were made for that market rather than the west. Japanese Ceramic Tall Flower Vase w/Irises. This lovely vase comes with its own flowers, elegant Japanese irises shaped in relief and standing on stems executed in strong and certain brushstrokes. Tall vases of this type are normally used in Nageire arrangements. Japanese Kyoto Ware Pierced Ceramic Bowl. This bowl combines two very typical Kyoto painted ceramic motifs of maple leaves and cherry blossoms. There are both red and green over-glaze maple leaves picked out in gold and black respectively, hanging from under-glaze brown branches. The cherry blossoms are white, clustering around a very strong under-glaze brown trunk. The background glaze is ivory colored with the fine crackle typical of Kyoto ware.
