This is a delightful and functional rendition of the traditional Japanese symbol for bounty from the sea, the bream. The well-executed carving of the fish is highlighted in black lacquer against the warm crimson body. The plate measures 9 1/2" across and 1" high. The body is slightly warped as is often the case with flat lacquer pieces and shows normal wear on the back...otherwise the condition is excellent.

Japanese Tsugaru Tataki-Nuri Lacquer Stand. This cosmetic stand is decorated in what is called the "tapped lacquer" technique.
