This is a delightful and functional rendition of the traditional Japanese symbol for bounty from the sea, the bream. The well-executed carving of the fish is highlighted in black lacquer against the warm crimson body. The plate measures 9 1/2" across and 1" high. The body is slightly warped as is often the case with flat lacquer pieces and shows normal wear on the back...otherwise the condition is excellent.

Japanese Lacquer Kagamibako and Bronze Mirror. This shallow, circular case is decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e with the exterior of the cover decorated in chrysanthemums bordered by Kiko-hanabishi, or diamond shaped flowers enclosed in a hexagonal "tortoise shell" lattice, a popular Heian period design motif. The interior of the case is a brownish-red. The bronze mirror shows excellent age and patination and is decorated in high relief with cranes to the left and a Minogame i ...click for details
