This is an unusual depiction of the normally jolly and satisfied Hotei in well-cast bronze. This fellow is, quite frankly, a bit stern looking but nonetheless has all the requisite corpulence and overstuffed baggage of the best Hoteis. The gift bag and robes on this piece are particularly well modeled. This fellow stands 5" high and significantly measures 7 1/2" across the base including belly and bag. The condition is very good with a few minor rubbings befitting its age. The pat ...click for details

Here is another charming Daruma awakening from years of meditation, but in bronze this time. His features are well modeled in good detail with a fine old patina. The size is right for an incense burner but the open back would lend itself to being a small hand warmer/brazier. The piece stands 8 1/2" tall and 5 1/2" wide at the belly. The condition is good with a few small casting holes, one on the right arm and one on the right eyebrow. There is an unread black ink inscription on t ...click for details

$1250 for the Pair

Japanese Bronze Art Nouveau Candle Stands. These candle stands are a classic example of how the Japanese packaged very traditional symbols to appeal to the “new” look of Art Nouveau early in the late 19th/early 20th century. The overlapping coin design on the base, butterflies on the sides, and flowers and tendrils twisting up the stands are classic Japanese but result in a “foreign” appearance intended to appeal to the western market. What is very Japanese is the exquisite craftsmanship and ...click for details

There is a lovely lappet border between the bulbous center and flaring tops. They have a beautiful feel and look to them with the left dragon grasping the pearl of wisdom and the right opposed dragon seeming to look longingly at its partner - or perhaps it wants the pearl! The inside is coated with a resin-like material, presumab ...click for details
