This is an exquisite ivory okimono of Ebisu holding his large bream and fan. The piece is modeled beautifully with incredible detail in the fish, fan and creel basket. The bream's eyes are inlaid with ebony and shell. These carving details are highlighted with gold, brown and black lacquer. The piece stands 4" tall and measures 2" at the widest. The condition is excellent. This piece can only be shipped within the United States.

This imposing Hotei is a favorite from my collection. It was purchased years ago as Japanese, but I have not been able to verify a Japanese origin or specific pottery. The glaze is ivory white with a very fine crackle that lends elegance to an already very refined piece. The cragged rock base lends weight to an otherwise typically happy Hotei figure. This is one of many Hotei in my collection, so if you have an interest in other examples, please let me know. This wonderful figure stands 12 ...click for details

Japanese Lacquer Okimono of Jurojin. Jurojin, the patron god of learning, had his origin in the Chinese deity Shou Lao and dates in Chinese mythology to the Han dynasty. He normally carries a staff as seen in this depiction, and always has the high forehead, normally without a cover. He is shown with the peach of long life in this version. As with the similar lacquer Hotei listed previously, I am having a hard time determining whether this piece is Japanese (my first guess) or Chinese. The ...click for details

Japanese Green Kutani Koma Inu or Temple Dogs. One often sees Shishi dogs in this color palette but this is the only pair of green Kutani temple dogs I have seen. They are well executed and are definitely a pair with opposing stance; there is some color difference in the green glaze especially on the top of the heads. They are large, standing slightly over 12” tall and measuring 7” by 5” across the brown bases. The bottoms have the typical linen-impressed clay base. The condition is very go ...click for details

Japanese Lacquer Drum Okimono. This rendition of a traditional Japanese drum in lacquer would not be very practical for use but is beautiful craftsmanship. The body is black lacquer while the drumhead is either gold lacquer or perhaps given its bright reflective surface, a gold foil. The condition is good with some loss of the black lacquer along the nail heads and loss of the gold lacquer over about half of the nail heads, both features which can be seen well in the photos. The drum measur ...click for details

Japanese Kutani Hotei on a Boat. Everyone's favorite Japanese household god, Hotei, is shown here in bright Kutani colors enjoying himself on a boat outing accompanied by spry chidori. The expression and detail of the face are a delight and the bright palette of colors adds a sparkle to the overall composition. The piece is 8 ¼" stem to stern and stands 4" tall, waves to bald noggin. The condition is very good with one small kiln adhesion on the front transom.
