Here is a delightful addition to any tea ceremony practitioner/collector in the form of a Tanuki incense container. The warm patina characteristic of older Bizen pieces is very evident although not shown to best advantage in the bright lights of digital photography. The piece stands 2 1/2" tall and 2 1/2" at the widest. The condition is excellent with a few small rubs as expected in an older piece.

This is an exquisite Shino-glazed food container for the tea ceremony decorated with underglaze iron fiddle heads and lattice. There are nice runs and drips of the glaze as well as fire marks that give the piece extra life and appeal. The piece is four-sided with indentations running down each corner. It measures 2 1/2" high and 4 1/2" across and sits on a shallow foot with an unread impressed seal mark. The condition is excellent.

Japanese Signed Bronze Usubata with Waves. This showpiece for ikebana arrangements has the classic wave foot so desired for its sense of motion and balance. This example has a wonderful patina and un-read signature on the base of the top. The usubata stands 6 ½” tall, and measures 8 ½” across the top and 7” across the foot. The condition is excellent.

Japanese Bronze Flower Vase. This is an interesting Chinese bronze form adapted for use in Japanese flower arranging. It includes a bulbous body with stylized acanthus leaves radiating around the sides and a thin vertical neck with Phoenix-head handles with loops. It’s rather a conglomeration of Chinese styles but it works reasonably well. The patina is a café au lait color….altogether a nice addition to anyone arranging flowers in a more traditional Japanese style. The piece is signed with ...click for details

Japanese Yellow Seto? Tea Bowl. I have tried for several years to determine the origin of this bowl with little success. My best estimate is that it is a modern version of the old yellow Seto wear but I am anything but certain. If you have ideas, please let me know. The bowl is a wonderful piece with indented side, pooled green crackled glaze in the inside bottom, and strong incised signature on the bottom. The condition is good with one glaze flake along the outside bottom rim (3/8” wide). ...click for details

Japanese Bronze 3-Leg Censor with Shishi. The strength of this diminutive piece is the bronze or silver inlay scroll of leaves and stylized flowers across the front and back. The shishi finial adds to the charm. The piece is well used for its intended purpose of burning incense. The dark patina is in overall good condition. One of the rectangular-shaped side arms is loose but I prefer to leave it as is rather than risk tightening it. The censor stands 6" tall and is 4" wide at th ...click for details

Japanese Bronze Usubata (Vase) for Ikebana with Chinese Scholar Scene. The strength of this very traditionally shaped usubata is the warm, honey brown patina and wonderful modeling of the Chinese scholar scene on the front. As seen in the close-up photo the scene includes scholar or hermit huts, dramatic rock formations and mountains, a boat floating past the huts, and elegantly branching pines, all composed to give a scene of peace and harmony. The usubata stands 11 ¾" tall and across t ...click for details

Japanese Green-glazed Tea Bowl or Chawan. This lovely, well-balanced bowl has a semi-transparent green, mottled glaze that drips nicely down the inside and outside top. The glazing on the outside was meticulously applied, leaving a triangle of unglazed brownish-rust ceramic on the bottom. The foot is high and very well formed. The bowl is 5 3/8" across at the top, 2 1/4" across the foot, and stands 3" tall. I am not sure of the origin or age of the piece. The condition is e ...click for details

Japanese Kyoto Ware Tea Bowl. This large winter tea bowl has a characteristic finely crackled, off-white glaze with bright rendering of Japanese Maple leaves. The front of the bowl depicts a red leaf with the color filing in the crackle and giving the effect of veining on the leaf. Further details of the leaf are picked out in gold, green and yellow enamel. A bright green maple leaf adorns the back. Small gold and raised white flower petals flutter over the bowl including the inside bottom. ...click for details
